I liked the first fifteen minutes or so of Show of Force - watching uniform go and arrest everyone on the estate was cool, and watching Smithy and Jack be leaders (without Neil standing on the sidelines propping Smithy up) was nice. Otherwise, I found the plot to be stretched thin - a criticism that I seem to make a lot and see being made a lot. The rest of the episode wasn't memorable, so much so that one week after watching it all I really remember is the initial raid.
As for Rescue Me...I wanted to punch Leon in the face about five minutes in, a feeling that only increased over the course of the episode. Smithy was not as authoritative as I would've liked (I notice Neil was there to prop him up again - and why did they even bother to put him in as he got about 30 seconds of screentime), and Tony was appallingly forgotten (was their budget/time really so tight as to prevent us from getting at least 30 seconds in a pub with Tony? Cut Neil out, put in a farewell do for Tony). And was I as the viewer supposed to be glad that Chelsea was returned to Lily? What if Lily finds herself in another abusive relationship? It's not like she did *anything* to get out of the one with Gavin, so how is she supposed to care for Chelsea?
All in all, pretty disappointed with both offerings. Here's hoping the next one is better - Grace + Jo partnership
